Tap Into Pickleball at The Welk
By Tyler Bohlman
Everyone vacations differently. Sometimes a vacation is a hall pass to lie out on the beach all day. Other times, your destination calls for something a little more high-stakes.
Friendly competition between friends and family—or even a fellow vacationer or two—is on full display at the pickleball courts at Hyatt Vacation Club® at The Welk. And for Evan F., the Activities Manager at The Welk, there’s no better place to try your hand at this fun and easy-to-play sport than while on vacation.
“Pickleball, I'd say, is our more popular activity because of how fast the sport is growing and how inclusive it is for all age ranges,” he says. “And it's a good way to connect everybody together because, no matter what, you're able to play. It’s low-impact and not hard on the body. If you don't want to make it too competitive, it could be more of a social thing.”
THE EVOLUTION OF PICKLEBALL AT THE WELK
Evan, who played baseball and football through high school, appreciates how this fast‑growing sport brings people together and gets them moving.
While working his way up to his current position, he’s seen—and experienced—the rise of pickleball at the resort.
What started as a recreation-attendant summer job in high school and through college transitioned into a manager role, and eventually to his current position as activities manager .
“We don't get too many people looking for tennis anymore,” he says with a laugh. “Pickleball is all the craze.”
We asked Evan a series of questions to better understand just how The Welk brings the sport to Owners and the many ways to join in on the pickleball “craze” during your stay.*

Can you walk us through the pickleball facilities here at the resort—how many courts do you have?
Evan: The Welk offers a total of eight pickleball courts on property. Four courts, located adjacent to the Melody Hill Fitness Center, are available on a first-come, first-served basis. These courts were originally tennis courts and were converted to pickleball courts several years ago. Additionally, four more courts are available by reservation for guests staying on property, as well as for local players.
What types of pickleball programming do you offer and how often do they run?
Evan: Pickleball at The Welk offers something for everyone! Beginners can join our Introduction to Pickleball sessions every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday at 1 PM, perfect for learning the basics in a fun, supportive environment. For those seeking a competitive edge, we host pickleball tournaments on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 5 PM. Or if you prefer a more casual experience, enjoy open play every morning from 9 AM to 10 AM. Whether you’re just starting out or if you’re ready for a challenge, The Welk is your destination for pickleball excitement!
Do you provide equipment for guests who are new to pickleball? Is staff on hand to help players learn the basics or improve their game?
Evan: We offer convenient pickleball equipment rentals for just $5 per group, including four paddles and two balls for up to four hours of play. Plus, if you’re new to the game or simply curious, our team is ready to help. They’re trained to guide you through the basics and ensure you feel confident and ready to enjoy the sport.
How does the resort accommodate different skill levels so that both experienced players and first‑timers can enjoy the courts without feeling intimidated?
Evan: The Welk accommodates different skill levels with the vast pickleball offerings we have. Our introductory lessons provide a comfortable way to learn the basics and build confidence. As players progress, they can join more competitive sessions to continue improving their skills.
What is something you tell yourself that inspires you to try something new, whether it’s pickleball or anything outside your routine?
Evan: Something I tell myself is, “Try everything at least once.” This helps me experience everything, whether it be new hobbies, new foods or new book genres. You will be surprised sometimes to find you like something you would never have expected. One example of that for me is roller coasters. I grew up afraid of heights, but now I love going to theme parks.
