Thailand’s Cinematic Gems: From Khao Lak to Bangkok

By Janet Brindle

Listen to this article

From the soaring limestone cliffs of Phang Nga Bay and the intimate, tranquil elegance of Khao Lak to the bustling streets of Bangkok, Thailand’s diverse beauty makes it a dream destination. And not just for adventurers and dreamers, but for entertainment scouts as well.

Movie and television producers know that a compelling script, a talented cast, and an emotional score can only be enhanced by the perfect location. After all, a good movie is like a two-hour vacation, so why not shoot in a place where people would most like to escape?

Sometimes the thing that makes the best first impression for audiences is a sweeping aerial on-location shot. So, it’s no wonder the Andaman coast in Thailand — also the location of the Marriott Vacation Club®, Khao Lak Beach Resort, opening late August/September 2025 — has been chosen so often for its exotic beauty.

Lush trees cover the land above a small beach where a calm ocean meets the sand.

The White Lotus Effect

When HBO series The White Lotus needed a high-end, exclusive destination in which to set the third season, Thailand was an obvious choice. The popular mysterious drama is known as much for its locations as for its evocative storylines and strong characters. While a resort in Koh Samui served as the main filming site, shots from the Andaman coast, Phuket, and Bangkok were also prominent.

And now, something known as The White Lotus Effect has sparked a travel boom by fans who want to visit the stunning beaches, sacred temples, and one-of-a-kind views experienced by the characters. Anticipating a 5% increase in tourism thanks to the show, the Tourism Authority of Thailand even created its own website specifically for fans of the show. The same post-show attendance bump happened in Italy for season two and Hawai‘i in its first season.

And it’s not unique to this show. Filmmakers have long been drawn to the natural beauty of Thailand.

Spy Stuff

Way back in 1974, The Man With the Golden Gun, part of the James Bond series, made history with a now famous scene in Phang Nga Bay. Now called James Bond Island, the towering limestone karst known locally as Ko Tapu rises dramatically from the crystal-clear waters. Today, it’s a must-visit for 007 fans and social media content creators alike.

Though it is just a boat ride away from the serene coastlines, it’s only accessible via guided tour because of the efforts to protect the natural beauty inside the Ao Phang Nga National Park.

Most tours also include a visit to the Koh Panyee floating village. If you’re feeling more adventurous, ask about booking a kayak tour to get closer to the steep, otherworldly rock formations rising from the emerald water.

A boat and its passenger sit on the calm, clear waters of the ocean as it cuts through natural rock formations.

Island Splendor

Thailand’s idyllic scenery also played a starring role in the 2000 adventure drama The Beach, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tilda Swinton. Filmed largely on Maya Bay in the Phi Phi Islands just east of Phuket, and in Bangkok, much of the film highlights the untouched natural splendor of Thailand’s beaches. Though a bit of a journey south from Khao Lak, this destination epitomizes the iconic paradise that continues to draw travelers and filmmakers.

Bustling Bangkok

Bangkok, Thailand’s bustling capital, has at least cameos in nearly all these films and television shows, offering a stark contrast to the tranquil beaches with a vibrant cityscape. As the country’s most populous metropolis, Bangkok blends cultural history while still serving as a hub for finance, business, and pop culture. And its vibrant nightlife made it a perfect backdrop for The Hangover Part II in 2011.

Despite its frequent appearances alongside Thailand’s beach destinations, Bangkok is more than 700 kilometers (430 miles) north of Khao Lak and over 800 kilometers (500 miles) from Phuket — making it a distinct and separate visit.

A clapper board is in focus as a city sits in the background.
