Top Things to Do in Auckland

By Esther Goh and Tyler Bohlman

Listen to this article

Auckland, New Zealand, is overflowing with local culture, breathtaking scenery, and a dynamic food and wine scene. Appropriately known as the City of Sails, you’re never far from a beautiful body of water and all the fun that comes with it. The sparkling Hauraki Gulf is home to several species of dolphins and whales. Head east and north for beaches of stunning white and gold. Venture west for otherworldly black-sand beaches and surf-worthy waves.

Explore City Delights

As far as world cities go, Auckland is relatively young, dating back only to the 19th century. But what it lacks in world history, it makes up for in contemporary wonder. For a bird's-eye view of its modern skyline, take a trip up the 1,000-foot-tall Sky Tower. Experience 360-degree views of the city and dine at its revolving restaurant, Orbit. And, if you dare, be sure to seize the chance to step out onto the SkyWalk platform. You’ll walk free among the clouds as there are no handrails (but don’t worry, you'll be in a harness for safety). Or take the leap with SkyJump and descend 53 floors to the ground at high speed.

After seeing the city from above, head down to stroll along the buzzing waterfront precinct, from the Viaduct to Wynyard Quarter. Pop into the Maritime Museum to immerse yourself in the fascinating heritage of this island nation. Learn about the first migrations in the early 1800s to the technological prowess now powering modern yachting innovations. If you're keen to get out on the water, a harbor cruise offers another perspective of the city skyline and can include a leisurely three-course meal aboard.

Dining on land is brimming with tempting options no matter the time of day (or night). Key areas to explore include Britomart, Commercial Bay, and Federal Street. But where to start? Head to Kingi to savor fresh seafood, oysters, mussels, snails, and a wide variety of fish served any way you can imagine. Nearby, Amano offers delectable Italian-inspired fare, and its famous bakery features a dizzying array of to-go pastries, tarts, slices, and loaves. Meanwhile, The Grove specializes in New Zealand-style cuisine with French influences.

Suburban Adventures

The central fringe suburbs offer yet more shopping, entertainment, and dining variety. Explore countless trendy eateries, gift shops, and boutiques. Visit Parnell for the Auckland Museum, a cultural gem that frequently hosts new exhibitions alongside its impressive historical collections. Delve into carefully curated exhibits devoted to the people and places of Oceania, the origins of New Zealand's distinctive environment and wildlife, and the history and culture of the indigenous Māori people.

Views for Days

Auckland is dotted with volcanic mountain cones, and the panoramic views from the top of any of these make the trek well worth it. Mount Eden, the highest peak at nearly 650 feet, is only about five miles from the city center. No less impressive is the summit of One Tree Hill, set in scenic Cornwall Park.

A Taste of the North

For an easy day-trip, head about 40 miles north toward the rolling valleys of Matakana, a region renowned for its food, wine, and natural beauty. On Saturday mornings, the artisan farmer's market draws crowds of locals and visitors alike with the promise of live music, fresh produce, and boutique stallholders.

Stop at the Honey Centre in Warkworth to sample some of New Zealand's best honey. And don't miss the iconic Puhoi Cottage Tea Rooms, known for classic scones with jam and cream, plus traditional mince and cheese pies.

Indulge all your senses at Brick Bay Wines, which offers much more than a vineyard. You can wander around the sprawling art trail featuring 70 sculptures by top New Zealand artists amid a backdrop of native bush. Once you've worked up an appetite, settle in for a long lunch and wine tasting. Even the restaurant is a design marvel, perched over a shimmering lake. You can't go wrong with the spiced lamb, and the polenta chips are a must-try.

Wining and Dining on Waiheke

Less than an hour's ferry ride from downtown, Waiheke Island is a can't-miss. It's home to about 30 world-class wineries, as well as pristine olive groves and beaches. Waiheke is also known for its creative community and is a haven for artists of all kinds.

For wine tasting, begin at Mudbrick, a vineyard and restaurant with unparalleled views over the water. Linger over their award-winning bottles and capture unforgettable photos among the picturesque grounds and gardens.

Te Motu (named after the original Māori name for Waiheke) is one of the oldest wineries on the island. Look no further for your rich Bordeaux-style pours, including its flagship variety. This complex cabernet sauvignon is a dominant blend of merlot, cabernet franc, and Malbec. And its award-winning restaurant's highly seasonal menu features ingredients grown on-site or locally sourced.

At Cable Bay, the restaurant's floor-to-ceiling windows perfectly frame views across the Hauraki Gulf to the city. Similarly, the cellar door boasts full-length windows offering a glimpse into the working winery. Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Syrah are among its standouts. Be sure to have a connoisseur tasting featuring delectable wine and cheese pairings or a dessert and wine combination.

The best of both worlds is found in Auckland. From cosmopolitan charm to lush landscapes, they’re all nearby and waiting to welcome you.
